Many countries in the world allow flexible immigration laws to attract new immigrants. According to Anholt-Ipsos Nation Brands Index, Canada scored first place on Governance, People, and Immigration and Investment and landed second place right after Germany in the Nation Brand (McGrath & Frankel, 2021).
Canada welcomes hundreds of thousands of newcomers every year. It heavily relies on immigrants to compensate for the aging population and the reduced population growth. According to Census 2021, nearly one in four people have been landed immigrants or permanent residents in Canada. Immigration will likely increase in the future, and immigrants could represent 29.1% to 34.0% of the total population by 2041, according to Statistics Canada (2022). It is important to note that some provinces are more attractive for immigrants to live in for various reasons, like the weather, job opportunities, etc. The Canadian Government tries to attract immigrants into provinces with less population by implementing programs that will benefit them in getting permanent residence faster or offering other incentives. However, no matter what, Ontario remains the number one province with the most immigrants.
In 2021, Ontario province received 198.530 immigrants ("Ontario Demographic Quarterly: highlights of the fourth quarter," 2022, n.p.). According to 2020 statistics shared on the website of the Government of Canada, Ontario province scored first in having the most prominent international student population totalling 48% in 2018. Also, according to Statistics Canada (2022), three out of ten international students who came to Canada since 2000 became landed immigrants (permanent residents), contributing to the economy and being a growing source of the job market. "Ontario was the province with the most immigrants in 2022, with 227,235 immigrants arriving between July 1, 2021, and June 30, 2022. Nunavut, Canada"s northernmost territory, had 52 immigrants arrive in the same period". (Statista Research Department, 2022).
Due to the high numbers of immigrants, it is important for the country to achieve successful immigration integration, which helps build strong communities for the country and the immigrants themselves. Immigrant Integration can be defined as the process by immigrants to acquire economic mobility and social inclusion. (Immigrant Integration, n.d). As Canada welcomes so many immigrants yearly with the primary goal of their integration in the social and labour space, we must look at ways to make that transition as smooth as possible.
There are different ways to help immigrants integrate, and acquiring intercultural competencies can assist in the process. Intercultural competencies allow people to communicate effectively with people from different cultures, learn how to solve conflicts and be mindful. The council of Europe (2001) promotes intercultural Integration and promotes an easy and smooth adaptation by acquiring intercultural competencies. Students who attend ESL classes can learn about them and acquire these competencies in the classroom setting. As one way of making the integration smooth, this work will examine how the acquaintance of the intercultural competencies affects immigrants, their social assimilation and whether it impacts their chances of getting and retaining a job.
