The authors of the article used stochastic production frontier models to estimate the parameters of the production function of Russian banks based on the stochastic production function for the period from the beginning of 2003 to the third quarter of 2005. Particular attention was paid to the analysis of the stability of the model results.

At the same time, specifications of models for assessing the technical efficiency of issuing (long-term) loans and attracting deposits were proposed. An assessment of technical efficiency in Russian banks was carried out, and a comparison of the obtained results with the results of the work was also performed.

In particular, it is shown that:
1. The main share of the banking services market for lending and deposits is occupied by banks with an average level of efficiency.
2. When comparing the distribution of efficiency ratings by quarter, it can be noted that there is an increase (albeit insignificant) in the average efficiency of banks both in terms of issuing loans and in terms of attracting deposits.
Factors influencing the efficiency of banks in both issuing loans and attracting deposits have also been identified. It turns out that the influence of such factors is not the same for different models. In particular, if St. Petersburg banks differ from Moscow banks in issuing loans and are closer to the rest, then in attracting deposits they are closer to Moscow banks.
