    Introduction

Any language of the world has the feature of variability of lexical units. In other words, in every language, including English, there are lexical units nominating one and the same objects with different connotations or emotional colouring. This phenomenon is called synonymy.
The problem of synonymy is one of the most important problems of modern linguistics. The study of synonymy as the possibility to use several words to denote one and the same concept took place long ago. Nevertheless, nowadays the problem of synonymy is not solved. Thus, the scientists cannot reveal the unified definition of the concept “synonymy”; the rules of identifying synonyms in a text are not stable; there is not yet any strict typology of synonyms of the English language. Consequently, the theme of the concept of synonymy in the English language is today relevant.

    1. Definition and Essence of the Notion “Synonymy”

In modern linguistics synonymy is one of the most controversial notions. On the one hand, the authors of books on lexicology discuss the so-called synonymic words existing in the English language. Broadly, they are words with the same meaning. On the other hand, the nature and essence of synonymy is widely debated by the representatives of different linguistic schools. Nevertheless, one cannot deny that in the English vocabulary there are words which clearly develop regular and distinct relationships while their usage in speech [Антрушина, Афанасьева, Морозова 2024].
The word “synonym” has Greek origin and came from the word synonymos with the meaning ‘of the same name’ [Арнольд 2012, p. 292]. Consequently, synonyms can be considered to be words which are different in orthography but similar in one or several meanings.
One of the broad definitions of the concept “synonymy” is given by K. Wales: “synonymy is the expression of the ‘same’ meaning by different words within a language: e.g. eiderdown v. quilt” [Wales 2011, p. 412]. This definition introduces one of the main characteristic features of synonyms – semantic “sameness”.
A more detailed definition of the notion “synonymy” is suggested by I.V. Arnold. According to the researcher, synonyms are words different in sounding and writing, referring to one and the same part of speech and having one or several similar meanings which denote the same concept but can be differentiated by connotations and semantic nuances, emotional or stylistic colouring, using and combinability within free or stable collocations [Арнольд 2012, p. 296].
