Most people in East Asia and in the West often have an erroneous and superficial understanding about each other and their culture. There are multiple factors why I think this way which I will briefly describe. One reason for this misunderstanding is the limited exposure many people have to authentic cultural experiences. East Asian cultures are frequently represented in the West through popular media that emphasizes stereotypes, rather than genuine cultural elements. Conversely, Western customs and values are often portrayed in East Asian media through simplified lenses, leading to a skewed perception. Additionally, language barriers exacerbate this issue, making it challenging for individuals from each region to access accurate information about the other.
To begin with, we do not have enough social interaction and exposure to comprehend their history and culture to the full degree. Even though, most of our technological, and cultural progress was intrinsically linked with discovering new cultures and horizons, pushing the frontier, avidly studying and assimilating a lot of the aspects from foreign nations in our daily life, such as technological innovations, religious and philosophical concepts. Western countries adopted some of the technologies from East Asia, but spent little trying to understand the culture. Moreover, nearly all of the art products that we consume from East Asia are polished, westernized versions for export, adapted for the needs of the market. This adaptation often strips away nuances that carry significant cultural meaning, leaving audiences with a diluted version of the original. As a result, Western consumers rarely get to experience the depth and complexity found in authentic East Asian art forms. Furthermore, these modified versions perpetuate misconceptions, as they reinforce a skewed image that aligns with Western tastes rather than showcasing true cultural expressions. Consequently, such portrayals can lead to a homogenized view of East Asian culture that fails to reflect its diversity and richness. Because of the above said the West has a deficiency in understanding about Asian cultures.
