Cardiovascular diseases are diseases that affect the heart or blood vessels. They are a range of painful conditions that develop mainly due to atherosclerosis of the blood vessels, i.e. hardening of the arteries. These include coronary heart disease (CHD), acute myocardial infarction (MI), heart valve malformations, lower extremity vascular disease, cardiac arrhythmias, high blood pressure, and strokes. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death for men over 45 years of age and women over 65 years of age in developed countries. They contribute significantly to disability, population morbidity and, increasingly, to rising health care costs, especially where populations are aging [3].
